Review links consistently, investigate patterns carefully, and avoid removing links based on metrics alone.
A backlink audit is a structured review of links pointing to your website. It can help you understand how your site is referenced and spot links that merit closer inspection. It is not a reason to label every unfamiliar domain harmful.
Build a reliable inventory
Export backlink data from more than one source if available, then normalize referring URLs and destination pages. Record the first-seen date, anchor text, link attribute, and source tool so later reviews are comparable.
Review in context
- Open the linking page and check whether it exists and is relevant.
- Look for a natural editorial reason for the link.
- Separate sitewide navigation or legitimate directories from editorial citations.
- Check for unusual patterns across many pages, not one metric in isolation.
Choose a measured response
Document findings and contact a site owner when a clearly unwanted placement can be corrected. Use search engine disavow tools only when you understand their purpose and have evidence of a meaningful manipulative pattern; routine low-quality links do not automatically require disavowal.
Keep a dated record of the review, evidence, and actions. This makes future audits faster and helps avoid repeating decisions without context.
